Learn some of the partnered Blues dancing done in the 1920s!
This workshop is for everyone interested in partnered Blues dancing, or in the wonderful vernacular partner dancing of the 1920s, including Blues.
Note on the video links:
The first one is a staged interpretation of late 1920s Blues dancing by the late dance historian Lance Benishek.
The second is a staged Blues dance demo by Simon Threlkeld and Carlynn Reed, and is not specifically 1920s (though the song is from the 1920s).
After the workshop, Simon plays 1920s Blues dance music until 10:30pm. Everyone is invited to stay.
Blues dancing is typically done in close embrace, as is most of 1920s partner dancing. And as are for example Balboa and Argentine Tango.
NEED A PARTNER?
A partner is NOT required. It is common for people to attend by themselves. Partner rotation is allowed and encouraged in all lessons. You may register on your own or with a partner. Nevertheless, if you still seek a partner, please post that at the Facebook event.

Learn Peabody (Swing Walk)!
Peabody is a lively traveling partner dance that was very popular in the Jazz Age and Swing Era, including at Harlem’s Savoy Ballroom, the heart of Lindy Hop in the Swing Era. It is usually danced to faster tempos.
In the 1930s, Peabody was part of every Lindy Hopper’s vocabulary at the Savoy, including the legendary Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers. They included it in their dance shows, building excitement before the grand finale, which was high energy Lindy Hop with air steps. See the above video link, for Lindy Hop greats Frankie Manning and Norma Miller showing the Peabody (Swing Walk) they danced at the Savoy in the Swing Era.
The basic Peabody step is walking. It also has syncopations, and can be danced slow, slow, quick, quick. A quintessential part of Peabody is the offset (“Yale”) position of the dancers, alternating between partner to your left, and partner to your right.
The Savoy Ballroom’s nickname “The Track,” is thought to refer to the Peabody dancing around the long dance floor to fast music.
Simon & Cheryl’s main teachers for Peabody are the very wonderful dance teachers Chad Fasca & Midori Asakura. See the above video link for them doing Peabody and 1920s Charleston (and winning the Fast Dance Division of what was then the main Lindy Hop championships in the world).
After the workshop, Simon will play 1920s music until the start of the Roaring 20s Jazz Age Saturday Night Swing at 6pm. Feel free to bring things to eat.

Dressing in 1920s style attire is encouraged, but optional.
Ben Harvey and his Ornamentals are Toronto’s premiere 1920s jazz dance band. Their music swings, and is excellent for both swing dancing, and for the super popular traveling partner dances of the Jazz Age and Swing Era.
In the first lesson, learn 1920s Jazz Age Partner Charleston. This was super popular in the mid 1920s, and is done by Lindy Hoppers all around the world today.
In the second lesson, learn vernacular Jazz Age Fox Trot, One Step and Two Step. The basic of 1920s Fox Trot is just walking. It is suited for all tempos of music from slow to fast. Vernacular Fox Trot is by far the most popular partner dancing of the Jazz Age, 1930s and Swing Era. All of the Swing music from the Swing Era that we play at swing dances today is described as Fox Trot on the original records and sheet music, because that is what people mostly danced then, including to Swing music.
The dance party will have Line-of-Dance (an outside track for traveling partner dances), to accommodate both Swing dancing, and the traveling partner dancing of the Jazz Age and Swing Era.
