TEACHERS
Learn Lindy Hop, the joyful classic Swing Dance, created by Afro-America dancers in Harlem in the 1920s and 30s, and done all around the world today!
Come join us and find out why we are so excited to share this dance with you!
In this course you will mostly learn 8-count Lindy Hop. 8-count and 6-count patterns are the main rhythm patterns in Lindy Hop. We also do other rhythm patterns all the time. When dancing we often do 6-count, 8-count and other rhythm patterns in the same song, it is all Lindy Hop.
You can take our two Lindy Hop beginners courses (one focuses on 6-count, the other on 8-count), in either order, or in the same session of courses.
We strongly encourage you to take each or our beginner courses more than once, for more thorough learning, to expand your repertoire, and for fun. It will never be exactly the same course, especially if the teachers are different. It is also 1/2 price (rounded to a multiple of $5) when you take the same course again in the same role.
Once you have done our 6-count and 8-count Lindy Hop beginner courses at least once each, you can take our intermediate 1 courses.
Perk: Everyone who takes a weeknight course with us in this session gets 1/2 price admission to Saturday Night Live Band Swing on February 21st, 2026 at St Barnabas. Consider it a graduation party!
NEED A PARTNER?
A partner is NOT required. It is common for people to attend by themselves. Partner rotation is allowed and encouraged in all lessons. You may register on your own or with a partner. Nevertheless, if you still seek a partner, please post that at the Facebook event.

Balboa Basics – The New Years Resolution Edition!

There will be an emphasis on good technique: comfortable hold, clear leading, responsive following, and maintaining the rhythm, flow and momentum and pointers on achieving your new year’s resolution practice goals. There will be plenty of drill and some friendly experienced assistants helping you progress more quickly.
Balboa is one of the classic Swing partner dances known for its smoothness, close embrace, rotational energy and intricate footwork. It is often danced to faster tempos. It is sometimes called the “dancer’s dance”.

Everyone in this class will be dancing in the lead and follow roles in equal measure. You’ve been learning Bal for at least 6 months (3+ sessions of our Beginner/Basics/Intro courses, or equivalent workshop experience in your primary role). You are comfortable with basic Pure Bal vocabulary, including Uphold Basic, Downhold Basic, Scoots, and Paddles in your primary role. You are comfortable with basic Bal Swing movements like Out & Ins, Toss Outs, Lollies, and Swivels in your primary role. No previous ELEF (Everybody Leads Everybody Follows) experience is required.
Not sure if this class is for you or don’t see a class for you? Contact Val/John at JVbalboaTO@gmail.com or Swing Toronto.
Balboa ELEF (Everybody Leads Everybody Follows) Intermediate & Up Course!
Everybody Leads, Everybody Follows! In this class you will learn Balboa from the point of view of both dance roles. Everyone in this class will be expected to lead and follow at a roughly 50/50 ratio. This class is designed for those who are intermediate level balboa dancers in one role, but no previous ELEF experience is required.
In this class we will tackle the Basic balboa vocabulary plus a little something extra, with a goal of enabling those who have never danced the other role to be successful. Each class in general will focus on a movement or concept, starting from the ground floor and building from there. You should be able to take away vocabulary from the other role, and also a newfound understanding of what it feels like to be on the other side of the dance partnership.
Perk: Everyone who takes a weeknight course with us in this session gets 1/2 price admission to Saturday Night Live Band Swing on February 21st, 2026 at St Barnabas. Consider it a graduation party!

Permission of the instructors.
You’ve been learning Bal for at least 3 years and you have received prior approval from the teachers to join the class. Please contact Val/John at JVbalboaTO@gmail.com or through Swing Toronto for more information. The approval process may involve an audition at the teachers discretion.
Additionally, you are confident dancing all the basic Pure Bal and Bal Swing shapes and connections at tempos above 200 BPM. These include but are not limited to: Uphold Basic, Downhold Basic, Scoots, Paddles, Come Around, Out and Ins, Lollies, Swivels, and Toss Outs. You are happy to dance a whole night of Balboa socially. You likely practice, and are ready to play with partnership and connection, not just new vocabulary. You understand that dance is a two way street and are interested in what your partner has to say.
This class is designed for high level dancers who want to dive more deeply into topics of connection and partnership. Vocabulary, while present, will take a backseat to refinement of fundamentals and comfortable communication with your partner. This class is about exploring our dancing and refining our voice. Let’s work on the nitty gritty details together!
